Crabs of Christmas Island

Infra-order Brachyura, Family Ocypodidae
Smooth-handed ghost crab | Ocypode cordimanus Latrielle, 1818

A medium size crab with a carapace to 45 mm wide. Its elongated eyestalks do not have ocular horns like Horn-eyed ghost crabs. The inner face of the claw is smooth, without a stridulating ridge. This translucent, cream colored crab is often tinged with yellow, pink or steel grey color. It is discrete but can be observed at night foraging on the beach. More common on Christmas Island than the Horn-eyed ghost crabs.
